The High Country Dictionary Project began in 2005 and is organized by our club. In 2014 it was carried out by our club, the Avery Rotary club and the Boone Kiwanis club. Nearly 300 service club members have touched the lives of nearly 7,700 high country students.
The goal of our project is to help all students to become good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so we give our dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.
In addition to dictionaries we also give printed spanish/english dictionaries, thesauruses, and atlases to older students. As our schools have adopted computers we have adapted our project to provide digital reference materials where they make sense.
